Henk Zanoli was presented with Israel’s Holocaust medal for hiding a Jewish child from the Nazis during World War Two.
But the Dutchman has returned his medal to the Israeli embassy in The Hague stating he could no longer own the honour.
He returned the medal after six of his family members were killed in an Israeli air strike on Gaza.
It has been estimated upwards of 2,000 people, the majority being Palestinian, have been killed in this latest conflict since July 8.
The Israeli Embassy in the Netherlands declined to comment.
Peace talks have resumed in Paris between Israeli and Palestinian authorities with the end of the five day ceasefire coming up.
